| Reverse description | A central medallion contains a left-facing portrait bust of Johann Friedrich Böttger, encircled by his name in Gothic script and the birth inscription 'geb. 1682 zu Schleiz'. The background scene, rendered in fine intaglio-style line engraving on a golden-ochre ground, illustrates a dramatic alchemical accident with a figure prostrate on a rocky cavern floor amid scattered vessels and billowing smoke, with a wolf-like animal visible at upper left. The upper border carries the Notgeld inscription in blackletter, flanked by diamond geometric ornaments. |

Schleiz was a small residual capital of the Reuß principalities, and its 1921 Notgeld issues reflect the brief municipal enthusiasm for artistically ambitious small-change substitutes during the hyperinflation run-up. The Böttger designation almost certainly refers to Johann Friedrich Böttger, the Saxon alchemist credited with discovering European hard-paste porcelain — a plausible civic reference given Thuringia's deep ties to the German ceramic industry.
The watermarked paper is the one technically distinguishing feature of this particular series within the broader Schleiz Notgeld output. Watermark security on issues of this denomination and type was far from universal among municipal issuers of the period.
