Berlin's 1921 Pfennig notgeld was issued in a deliberate series organized by district, a municipal decision that reflected both administrative pride and the logistical reality of the postwar coin shortage. Spandau, incorporated into Greater Berlin only in 1920 under the Greater Berlin Act, appears here as a named district for the first time in any official currency context — the ink barely dry on the merger.
The Magistrat issued these in numbered runs across districts, which is why collectors typically pursue the full district set rather than individual pieces. Incomplete sets are common; Issue 8 from Spandau tends to be among the easier to locate.
