Bargteheide is a small town in Holstein, and this 1921 Pfennig note was issued specifically to facilitate a Gauturnfest — a regional gymnastics festival — rather than as ordinary municipal emergency currency. These event-tied Notgeld issues were common during the hyperinflationary spiral of the early Weimar period, when local organizers found it easier to print their own scrip than rely on increasingly scarce small-denomination Reichsmark coinage.
Johann Hinrich Meyer was a Hamburg commercial printer with no particular distinction in intaglio work, and the production here reflects that.
