Additional information

Bad Mergentheim notgeld was issued in the chaotic final months of World War I, when the Imperial German government's metal requisitions had stripped civilian minting of copper and nickel entirely, forcing municipalities to strike emergency coinage in iron. Bad Mergentheim had particular historical weight as the longtime seat of the Teutonic Knights' Grand Mastership — a distinction the town held from 1525 until Napoleon dissolved the Order in 1809. The Funck reference places this among a closely documented series of württembergische municipal iron issues from 1918.
