Teterow is a small market town in Mecklenburg, and like hundreds of German municipalities it issued its own emergency paper money — Notgeld — during the acute coin shortage that followed the First World War. The Stadt Teterow notes were a local administrative response to a national problem: the disappearance of low-denomination metal coinage from circulation as hoarding and metal requisitioning gutted the everyday money supply.
