Obverse description The obverse carries a multicolour letterpress vignette illustrating a rural border scene: red-brown cattle crossing a stream into a meadow landscape, one figure knocked to the ground in the foreground, while two figures stand near a post bearing a red-framed sign inscribed "GRENZE" at right, with a village church steeple visible in the background. The border is formed by a geometric red-and-blue chequered frame. Below the vignette a two-line German verse reads "DAS VIEH FRAGT NICHTS NACH GRENZ UND PASS, / WENN DRÜBEN LOCKT DAS BESSERE GRAS", with the artist's signature "ERWIN NOBBE 1920" centred beneath the scene.

Lutzhöft is a small village in Schleswig-Holstein, and like hundreds of similarly obscure German municipalities, it issued emergency small-change notes — Kleingeldscheine — during the coin shortage that followed the First World War. The 1920 date places this squarely in the second wave of German notgeld, after the initial wartime emergency issues and before the hyperinflationary flood of 1922–23 that would make even these modest denominations economically meaningless within a few years of printing.

Gebr. & Kunze of Flensburg handled a substantial share of Schleswig-Holstein's municipal notgeld output. Designer Erwin Nobbe's involvement is notable — his name appears on a number of artistically ambitious regional issues from this printer.
