Comments

Cottbus municipal notgeld of this denomination belongs to the first wave of German city-issued emergency currency, a response to the Reichsbank's inability to supply adequate small change during the coin shortages of 1916–1917. The Magistrat — the city council itself, not a private issuer — bore direct liability for redemption, a legal exposure most municipalities resolved quickly once central supplies normalized.

At 70 × 40 mm, the format is among the smallest produced in this period, which contributed to heavy handling wear. Uncirculated survivors are disproportionately rare relative to issued quantities.
