Canth — now Kąty Wrocławskie — issued this note as part of the enormous wave of municipal Notgeld that swept German-administered Silesia from 1917 onward, when small-denomination coinage had effectively vanished from circulation, hoarded or melted. Stadt Canth was a modest Lower Silesian town with no particular financial infrastructure, so local authorities contracted Grube & Schneider in nearby Freiburg, Schlesien — a printing house that handled Notgeld commissions for several surrounding municipalities during the same period.
The single signature, Toppe, almost certainly represents a local Bürgermeister or Stadtkämmerer, though no broader administrative record of this individual appears in standard Notgeld reference literature.
