Appen is a small municipality in Schleswig-Holstein, and like thousands of German towns it issued Notgeld during the acute small-change shortage that followed the First World War. The Konrad Hanf printing house in Hamburg produced notes for numerous northern German municipalities during this period — a commercial job printer rather than a specialist security printer, which is reflected in the relatively modest production quality typical of early Kleingeldscheine issues.

Appen's Notgeld has no particular rarity attached to it in the major reference catalogs, suggesting a normal print run rather than a limited collector-targeted issue of the later Serienscheine variety.
