Wittenberge's Schutzverband für Handel und Gewerbe — a local merchants' and trades protection association — was among the countless civic and commercial bodies that stepped into the void left by Germany's acute small-denomination coin shortage during and immediately after the First World War. Notgeld of this type was a practical solution to a real problem: hoarding of metal coinage had stripped everyday transactions of their change.
Gebrüder Parcus in Munich printed enormous volumes of municipal and corporate Notgeld during this period, supplying issuers across Germany from a single southern press operation. Their involvement here is entirely routine for the type.
