Stavenhagen's 1921 Notgeld issue comes from the hometown of Fritz Reuter, the Low German dialect writer whose work defined regional identity in Mecklenburg throughout the nineteenth century. Small towns across Weimar-era Germany issued emergency currency partly out of genuine coin shortages and partly as collectible civic promotion — Stavenhagen was no exception, and the Bärensprungsche Hofbuchdruckerei in Schwerin was a natural choice, having served Mecklenburg's official and municipal printing needs for generations.
Three signatories on a 50 Pfennig note is slightly unusual and suggests the full municipal council required collective authorization for even minor fiduciary instruments.
