Hohenfriedeberg — now Dobromierz in southwestern Poland — is best known for Frederick the Great's decisive 1745 victory over the Austro-Saxon forces there, but this note dates from a far less glorious moment: the municipal cash shortages of the First World War or its immediate aftermath, when German towns and cities issued their own emergency fractional currency, the Notgeld, to compensate for the disappearance of metal coinage from circulation. The Stadthauptkasse, the municipal treasury rather than a bank, was the issuing body — common for smaller Silesian municipalities with no local savings institution of sufficient standing.
Hohenfriedeberg's series is not among the better-documented Notgeld issues, and surviving specimens are infrequently cataloged with confirmed print run data.
