Nienhagen is a small coastal village in Mecklenburg, and its notgeld series is among the more locally specific of the 1921–22 collector issues — designed by Egon Tschirch, a Rostock-born painter known for Baltic landscapes and regional subject matter. His involvement gives the series a coherence that much municipal notgeld lacks.

The .1-3/3 suffix indicates this is the third note of a three-piece set, issued as a matched series rather than a standalone denomination. Collector demand drove most of these Mecklenburg issues; actual circulation was secondary to the philatelic market that had developed aggressively around notgeld by 1921.
