Kreissparkasse Hofgeismar was one of hundreds of German district savings banks that turned to emergency currency — Notgeld — during the severe coin shortages that plagued Germany from around 1916 onward. These local institutions issued small-denomination scrip out of practical necessity, not monetary ambition. Gebrüder Gotthelft in Cassel was a regional workhorse printer for this type of material, supplying numerous Hessian issuers during the same period.

Hofgeismar is a small town north of Cassel in what was then Hesse-Nassau. The district's issues are modestly collected rather than avidly pursued — DeNG reference 619.2 covers a narrow series with limited variant interest.
