Keitum is one of the oldest settlements on Sylt, and its municipal authority issuing its own emergency currency — Notgeld — places this note firmly in the post-WWI economic chaos that pushed thousands of German towns and villages into printing their own fractional notes between 1918 and 1922. Edler & Krische in Hanover were prolific Notgeld printers, responsible for a significant portion of the municipal issues from Lower Saxony and beyond during this period.

The designer credit to Holtz is the kind of detail that separates a serious collection from a casual one — many Notgeld issues went uncredited entirely. Lorenz Hoffmann's signature as municipal signatory confirms local administrative authorization rather than a bank-backed instrument.
