Comments

Esens is a small market town in East Frisia, and like hundreds of German municipalities it resorted to locally issued Notgeld during the acute coin shortages of World War One and its aftermath. The Magistrat — the town's administrative council — had no printing infrastructure of its own; these small-denomination notes were typically contracted to regional printers, though the specific press for Esens issues is not always documented in surviving records.

East Frisian Notgeld from this period is modestly collected as a regional subset, but Esens pieces attract no particular premium outside specialist circles.
