Hamelin's municipal notgeld program ran well into the inflation period, and this 50 Pfennig piece belongs to the wave of 1922 issues produced as small-denomination coins became essentially impossible to keep in circulation — hoarding and melting had made genuine change nearly extinct. Appelhans in Braunschweig handled a substantial volume of municipal emergency paper across Lower Saxony during these years, functioning almost as a regional clearinghouse for desperate town treasuries.
Hamelin leaned hard into its Pied Piper identity for collector appeal — the town understood early that well-designed notgeld sold to philatelists and tourists, effectively generating free municipal credit.
