Comments

Stendal's 1921 notgeld issue belongs to the second wave of German municipal emergency money — not the inflationary peak, but the transitional period when Reichsbank coin was still being hoarded and small change remained genuinely scarce. The Stadtkasse, literally the city treasury rather than a private bank, bore direct responsibility for redemption, which made these notes fractionally more trusted locally than commercial equivalents.

Stendal sits in the Altmark, the "Old March" west of the Elbe — a detail some issuers of the period exploited for regional identity branding on their notgeld series. Whether this issue did so is the kind of thing the note's face will tell you faster than this entry can.
