| Reverse description | The upper portion presents a panoramic bird's-eye townscape vignette of Schmiedefeld, labelled in a cartouche at lower centre, framed by a decorative rope-twist border with a leafy garland arch at top; flanking side panels contain full-length figures in traditional Thuringian rural dress — a shepherd with crook and flock at left, and a peasant woman carrying a bundle of wood at right. Denomination numerals '50' and 'Pfg' occupy the upper corners. The lower register carries a two-line aphoristic motto in Gothic script. |

Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig is a village in the Thuringian highlands, and this 50 Pfennig piece belongs to the vast wave of municipal Notgeld issued across Germany between 1920 and 1922 — when chronic small-coin shortages forced even minor parishes to print their own emergency currency. The Graphische Werkstätten in nearby Ilmenau handled a significant portion of Thuringia's municipal Notgeld production during this period, supplying dozens of small issuers across the region.
Schmiedefeld's issue is among the more obscure Rennsteig-area pieces, which for collectors of topographical Notgeld is precisely the point.
