| Obverse description | Notgeld issue printed in brown and tan tones on a cream paper ground, with an ornate art nouveau border of scrollwork and decorative cartouches flanking the central oval vignette. The denomination 'Fünfzig Pfennig' is set in large Gothic script across the upper field, while the central oval carries the redemption pledge text and validity date of 30 September 1922. Schmalkalden sits in what was then the Prussian enclave of Herrschaft Schmalkalden, a jurisdictional oddity surrounded by Thuringia that had belonged to Hesse-Kassel before being absorbed by Prussia in 1866. The Kreisausschuss — the district committee — issued this note as part of the broader Notgeld wave of the early 1920s, when local authorities across Germany printed emergency small change to compensate for the chronic shortage of official coinage during the inflationary period.
Feodor Wilisch was a local Schmalkalden printer, and Kurt Jäckel's involvement as designer suggests a deliberate artistic commission rather than a purely functional job. The DeNG reference 1184.1-6/6 indicates this is the sixth of six known varieties in the series.
