Obverse description Green and ochre Notgeld note printed in letterpress with the city arms of Erkelenz at centre — a shield divided per fess showing a golden lion on blue above a white rose on white — framed within a rectangular vignette. The denomination "Fünfzig Pfennig" is set in large blackletter script to either side of the arms, with the numeral 50 repeated in each corner and in subsidiary panels. Beneath the arms, the issuer inscription "Stadt Erkelenz" appears in bold blackletter, followed by a text block stating the note is accepted by the Stadtkasse Erkelenz and expires four weeks after notice in the Erkelenzer Kreisblatt; the date "Erkelenz, 22. August 1921" and the manuscript signature of the Bürgermeister appear at lower left and right respectively. Decorative agricultural vignettes — sheaves of grain at upper left and flowering plants at upper right — complete the design.

Reverse description The reverse carries a large oval central vignette rendered in a medieval illumination style, illustrating a historical scene set Anno 1326 in which Count Reinhold of Geldern presents the town charter to the citizens of Erkelenz, with a crowd of figures in period dress gathered before a town gate and half-timbered structures. The denomination numeral "50" appears in blackletter at upper left and right corners against an ornate ochre arabesque underprint border. An inscription in blackletter runs across the top reading "Erkelenz unter den Grafen von Geldern" and along the bottom "Graf Reinhold überreicht die Stadturkunde", with "Anno" and "1326" flanking the lower portion of the vignette.
