Obverse description Notgeld (emergency money) issued in memory of Goethe's ancestral ties to Artern, printed in brown and ochre tones. A central oval vignette contains a silhouette portrait of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in right profile, inscribed 'Goethe' below, flanked on either side by letterpress vignettes of local buildings captioned 'Zur Krone' (left) and 'Goethehaus' (right). The denomination '50 Pfennige' appears in large numerals at lower left and right, with the validity inscription 'Gültig bis Sylvester 1921' and place name 'Artern i. Thüringen' in the lower central panel, accompanied by the municipal coat of arms and two facsimile signatures of the Bürgermeister and Beigeordneter.
Obverse lettering Göthegeld von Artern
Zum Gedächtnis der Goetheahnen
Aus Artern zog ein Schneiderlein
Des Hufschmieds Sohn, einst hin zum Main,
Damit in Frankfurts alten Toren
Werd Dichter Goethe mal geboren.
Von Weimar trieb so manchmal ihn
Zu seiner Ahnenstätte hin,
Er rastete dann zweifelsobne
Im Gasthofe Zur gold'nen Krone.
Zu Hermann und der Dorothee
Fand er in Artern die Idee;
Und wie die Handlung ist geschehn
Möcht du in Rambergs Bildern sehn.
Gültig bis Sylvester 1921.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in multicolour — dark brown, green, and red — with a central rectangular vignette executed in a woodcut-style technique, illustrating a scene from Goethe's 'Hermann und Dorothea': two figures, a kneeling woman and a standing man, in a rustic outdoor setting beneath leafy branches. The central vignette is framed by a broad ornamental border of stylised acanthus foliage in dark green with red thistle or poppy motifs at each corner, creating a rich Arts and Crafts-influenced decorative surround.
