Rieder is a small village in the Harz region of Saxony-Anhalt, and its 1921 Notgeld issue belongs to the last significant wave of municipal emergency currency before the hyperinflation of 1922–1923 rendered small-denomination scrip economically irrelevant. Like hundreds of similar Gemeinde issues, this note was produced to address the chronic shortage of Reichsmark coinage — a problem that persisted long after the First World War ended, as metal hoarding and mint capacity failures left everyday commerce without adequate change.
The "a-b" variant designation in the DeNG reference indicates at least two distinguishable states, most likely differing in signature, paper stock, or serial arrangement rather than a formal reprint.
