Obverse description The obverse is printed in green, grey, and black on cream paper, with a bold Gothic-script title inscription at upper centre reading 'Notgeld der Gemeinde Mülsen-St. Jakob'. The central vignette presents the municipal coat of arms — a heraldic shield with a triangular device and green lozenge charges — flanked by two rampant lions rendered in a stylised Art Nouveau manner. A dark vertical panel at right carries the denomination '50 Pfg.' in large grey Gothic numerals, with validity text 'Gültig bis 30. Sept. 1921'; the lower margin bears the date, a serial number, the manuscript signature of the Gemeindevorstand, and the printer's imprint.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in green, grey, and black on cream paper, with a decorative border of diamond and star ornaments framing a central vignette in a humorous genre style. The scene shows two men in dark frock coats conversing in hushed consultation before a seated official at a writing desk, evoking a courtroom or administrative setting. Below the vignette, a two-line rhyming German couplet in Gothic script reads 'Schnell reift im Kläger der Entschluß, / Daß man die Antwort meiden muß'; denomination panels marked '50 Pfg.' in Gothic lettering appear at left and right within the border.
