Roßbach bei Braunsbedra sits in the lignite-mining belt of what was then the Prussian province of Saxony, and this 1921 Pfennig-denomination Notgeld reflects precisely the problem that drove thousands of German municipalities to print their own small change that year: the Reichsbank could not keep pace with coin demand during the postwar inflationary spiral, and denominations under one Mark effectively vanished from everyday commerce. Local councils filled the gap themselves.

Gemeinde-issued Notgeld at the 50 Pfennig level was typically short-lived — most series were recalled within months once the issuing authority had collected enough fees or the currency situation shifted.
