| Reverse description | Richly coloured multicolour reverse in red, blue, and ochre with an ornate foliate and cloud-like underprint surround. At centre, a large blue rococo cartouche frames an oval white reserve containing a stylised porcelain tureen or vessel motif, a likely reference to the Volkstedt porcelain manufactory. Flanking the central cartouche are silhouette vignettes of local architectural landmarks — a church tower to the left and an industrial tower or kiln structure to the right — with the denomination "50" repeated in red at each corner and the issuing authority inscription "Notgeld der Gem. Volkstedt S.-A." along the lower margin in Gothic script. |

Volkstedt was a small porcelain-industry town in Thuringia, and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1921 it issued its own Kleingeldersatz — substitute small change — to address the coin shortages that plagued the early Weimar inflation period. These municipal notgeld issues were technically illegal tender outside the issuing locality, binding only the town's own merchants and administration.
The watermark is worth noting; most notgeld at this denomination level skipped security features entirely. Someone made a deliberate choice to spend on paper stock.
