Barby is a small town on the Elbe in Saxony-Anhalt, and its 1921 Notgeld issue belongs to the second wave of German municipal emergency currency — produced after the postwar coin shortage made small change almost impossible to conduct ordinary commerce. The Magistrat, essentially the town council, had legal authority to issue these notes under the broader emergency money framework the Weimar government tolerated rather than formally sanctioned.

Like most Kleinnotgeld of this period, the issue was almost certainly printed by a regional commercial press rather than a security printer. Redemption periods were typically short and strictly enforced by the issuing municipality.
