Comments

Notgeld from the twin Dithmarschen districts — Norderdithmarschen and Süderdithmarschen — reflects a peculiar administrative quirk: two separate Kreise issuing under a joint authority, a cooperative arrangement that was genuinely unusual for Prussian emergency coinage of the period. The districts had been administratively divided since 1867 but retained strong regional identity rooted in the medieval Dithmarschen peasant republic, one of the few self-governing commoner states in northern Europe.

J. C. König & Ebhardt of Hannover were prolific Notgeld printers and handled enormous volume during the 1918–1923 emergency issue years. Their output was reliable but rarely distinguished.
