Nürtingen's 1920 Notgeld issue was one of thousands of municipal emergency notes printed across Germany as postwar coin shortages made small-denomination transactions nearly impossible. The Uhland'sche Buchdruckerei in Stuttgart was a regional commercial printer that handled a significant volume of Württemberg Notgeld work during this period — not a specialist banknote firm, which shows in the modest production values typical of these civic issues.

Notgeld of this type was formally demonetized by mid-1922, shortly before hyperinflation made the denomination irrelevant anyway.
