Obverse description Central octagonal vignette bordered by a dotted frame presents a view of a historic town gate with a red-roofed tower set against a blue sky, rendered in a fine letterpress illustrative style. The denomination numeral '50' appears in red at both upper corners in decorative Gothic lettering, with the title 'Fünfzig Pfennig' and the initials 'F.B.' arched across the top. Two text cartouches in blackletter script flank the central vignette, the left bearing a folk verse and the issuing authority 'Der Stadtrat Dez. 1920' with a manuscript signature above 'i. Bürgermeister', while the right carries a validity clause; a red serial number appears at lower right.

Mainbernheim is a small Franconian town — population well under a thousand even today — and its 1920 Notgeld issue is a product of the coin shortage that forced hundreds of German municipalities, however minor, to print their own emergency small change after the First World War. The volume of such issues was staggering; by some estimates over 700,000 distinct Notgeld pieces appeared between 1919 and 1922.

M. Horschig & Schubert in nearby Kitzingen handled a number of regional Notgeld commissions during this period, keeping production local. Franz Böhm's design credit is the most traceable individual detail this note carries.
