Rügenwalde — now Darłowo in northwestern Poland — issued this emergency note during the Weimar-era Notgeld wave that flooded Germany with thousands of locally printed small-denomination scrip pieces between 1919 and 1922. The municipal issues of Pomeranian towns like Rügenwalde were driven partly by the chronic shortage of small-denomination Reichsmark coinage and partly by the opportunity for local revenue through collector sales.

The town was expelled from German administration following the Potsdam Agreement in 1945, making all pre-war municipal paper from this region documentary curiosities of a place that no longer exists under its original name.
