Templin's 1920 Pfennig notgeld belongs to the vast wave of municipal emergency currency that flooded Germany as small-denomination coinage disappeared from circulation during the postwar economic dislocation. Adolf Forker of Leipzig was a minor commercial printer who handled notgeld contracts for numerous provincial towns during this period — competent workmanship, nothing exceptional.
Templin itself is a small walled town in Brandenburg, and like hundreds of similar municipalities it issued these notes purely out of necessity, with no central coordination or standardized redemption guarantee beyond the issuing city's own word.
