Sörup is a small parish in the Angeln region of Schleswig, and this note dates to one of the most politically charged moments in its history — the 1920 plebiscite that ultimately returned northern Schleswig to Denmark while leaving Angeln, including Sörup, within Germany. Local Notgeld from this area in 1920 carried an undercurrent of contested identity that most small-town emergency currency did not.
Printed by Aug. Westphalen of Flensburg, a firm that handled considerable regional Notgeld output during this period. The watermarked paper is a modest security measure for a fractional denomination at this level of issue.
