Bayreuth's municipal government issued this Notgeld note in 1918 as the imperial supply chain for coin metal collapsed entirely under wartime demand. Small-denomination coinage had effectively vanished from circulation by mid-1917, forcing hundreds of German municipalities to print their own emergency scrip — Bayreuth among them. The Stadtmagistrat had legal authority to issue such notes under Reichsbank tolerance, though technically these were always redeemable obligations rather than legal tender in any formal sense.

Municipal Notgeld of this vintage tends to show heavy circulation wear; these notes passed through many hands in daily market transactions before the stabilization efforts of 1919 made them redundant.
