Danzig's municipal savings bank issued this 50 Pfennig note in 1914 as emergency small-change currency — Kleingeldscheine of this type proliferated across German cities when metal coinage disappeared from circulation at the outbreak of the First World War. The Magistrat der Stadt Danzig was acting well within established German municipal emergency currency practice, and similar notes appeared from dozens of Städtische Sparkassen that same autumn.
The print date of 30 April 1945 is almost certainly a catalog error or a misread archival date — by that point Danzig had fallen to Soviet forces, and no functioning municipal printing operation existed there.
