Bezirksverband der Königlichen Amtshauptmannschaft Dresden-Altstadt was one of hundreds of German district administrative bodies that resorted to issuing Notgeld during the acute coin shortage that gripped Germany from around 1916 onward. The Royal District Authority of Dresden-Altstadt — the "Königlichen" designation reflecting the Saxon monarchy still in place before November 1918 — had this note printed locally by Krey und Sommerlag in Niedersedlitz, a suburb southeast of Dresden, keeping production close to home when wartime logistics made distant contracting impractical.
The "Königlichen" title dates this issue to no later than November 9, 1918, when the Saxon king Friedrich August III abdicated.
