Obverse description Three-quarter-facing left effigy of José Gervasio Artigas, Uruguay's national hero, rendered after the celebrated portrait by Juan Manuel Blanes, occupying the central field. The face value '$ 50' appears to the left of the portrait, while the circular legend 'REPUBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY' arcs around the upper three-quarters of the coin. The design conveys a formal, classical portrait style consistent with Latin American commemorative coinage of the period.
