| Obverse description | Intaglio portrait of José Pedro Varela in three-quarter view to the right occupies the centre-right field, his name inscribed on a ribbon vignette at lower right. The Uruguayan coat of arms appears at upper left above the watermark area, set against a fine multicolour guilloche underprint in green and red tones.
