Queen Joanna of Castile — known to history as Juana la Loca — was the legitimate sovereign of Spain from 1504 yet never exercised real power, first subordinated by her father Ferdinand II and then by her son Charles I, who kept her confined at Tordesillas for over four decades until her death in 1555. Her inclusion in Cuba's 1991 commemorative program, issued during the island's catastrophic "Special Period" following Soviet collapse, creates a quietly ironic pairing: a ruler denied authority on a coin struck by a state itself navigating existential crisis.
The Casa de la Moneda de Cuba produced several large-format silver issues in this period primarily for the export collector market, as hard currency had become desperately scarce domestically.
