| Obverse description | The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the central field, featuring the traditional escutcheon with key, royal palm, and fasces, surmounted by the Phrygian cap on a pike. A curved legend at the top reads REPUBLICA DE CUBA, while the denomination 50 PESOS appears in the lower field. The fineness AU 0.999 and weight designation 1/10 OZ are inscribed to either side of the arms. A rope border runs close to the rim, encircling the entire design. |

The Pinzón brothers — Martín Alonso and Vicente Yáñez — commanded the Pinta and the Niña respectively on Columbus's 1492 voyage, yet they have never enjoyed the same historical prominence as their employer. This 1991 issue was part of Cuba's extended commemorative program marking the quincentennial of that voyage, a series that ran across multiple years and metals as the 1992 anniversary approached.
Vicente Yáñez Pinzón later commanded his own expedition in 1499–1500, reaching the Brazilian coast before Cabral's celebrated landfall.
