Pattern coinage from Casa de Moneda de México in the late 1980s was driven largely by practical necessity — the peso had lost so much value through the debt crisis and successive devaluations of 1982–1987 that the mint was actively exploring cheaper base-metal compositions to replace the existing circulating alloy. Chromed-steel trials like this one were part of a broader evaluation of materials that would eventually inform the 1992 redenomination and coinage overhaul, when the nuevo peso replaced the old at a ratio of 1,000 to one.
Krause's PL#72B designation places this among a documented series of 50-peso material trials. Few were ever released beyond internal mint distribution.
