Obverse description The aluminium bronze centre features the Mexican national coat of arms — an eagle displayed left, perched on a nopal cactus rising from a rocky islet, grasping a serpent in its beak and talons. The motif is rendered in high relief with fine detail. The surrounding stainless steel ring bears the national legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS arching along the upper periphery, flanked at the base by decorative laurel and olive branches tied with a ribbon.

Reverse description The centre displays a forward-facing bust of Benito Juárez in low relief, turned slightly to the left. To the left of the portrait, the denomination $50 and the date 1988 are inscribed in the field, while the Mexico City mint mark Mo appears to the right. The legend JUAREZ is positioned to the lower right of the effigy. The stainless steel ring surrounding the centre is plain and undecorated.
