Reverse description A facing bust portrait of Juan de la Cosa, the Spanish cartographer and navigator, is rendered in high relief at the center of the field, depicted wearing a soft cap and a draped cloak with a high collar. The portrait is flanked on either side by an olive branch, with the two branches meeting at the base around a small bird motif. The upper arc of the legend reads V CENTENARIO, separated by five-pointed stars, while the lower arc bears JUAN DE LA COSA reading left to right. The date of issue 1990 appears to the right of the portrait in the field, and the commemorated historical date 1492 is inscribed vertically along the lower right, separated by a star. A rope-style beaded border encircles the entire design.
