Rodó died in 1917 in Palermo, largely forgotten by the broader public, yet by 1971 Uruguay was issuing commemorative coinage in his honor — a measure of how dramatically his reputation had been rehabilitated across Latin America in the intervening decades. His 1900 essay Ariel had become required reading across the continent, framing Latin American identity in opposition to what Rodó saw as the corrosive materialism of the United States.
The KM#58a designation identifies this as the silver proof pattern variant, distinct from the circulating issue. Pattern status means it was produced for approval rather than general release — survival numbers are correspondingly small.
