Paraguay's Banco de la República was reorganized under a 1936 state banking reform that consolidated earlier monetary institutions — this series was among the first issued under that reconstituted authority, printed by ABNC to the company's usual exacting intaglio standards. The relationship between Paraguayan state banks and American Bank Note Company stretched back decades, making New York the de facto production center for Paraguayan paper currency through much of the early twentieth century.
P#165 is a comparatively scarce entry in the series. Paraguay's economic instability during the mid-1930s, coming hard on the heels of the Chaco War's financial devastation, meant circulation volumes were high and survival rates for used examples are correspondingly low.
