Banco Nacional was one of several private banks of issue operating in Colombia during the 1880s — not to be confused with the later state-owned Banco Nacional established by the government of Carlos Holguín Mallarino in 1880, which had its own overlapping series. The private Banco Nacional held a concession to issue notes redeemable in coin, an arrangement that grew increasingly strained as specie reserves came under pressure toward the end of the decade.
ABNC printed this series in New York, as they did for the majority of Colombian private bank issues of the period. The PS prefix in the Pick reference indicates it falls within the Specialized catalog for Colombian private and state bank issues rather than the standard national series — a distinction that matters when cross-referencing auction records, where these notes are frequently miscatalogued.
