Reverse description The reverse features a detailed frontal view of Antoni Gaudí's iconic Basílica de la Sagrada Família in Barcelona, its distinctive organic spires rising prominently to fill the upper and central field. The denomination '50' appears in large numerals to the left, with 'PTAS' inscribed beneath it. The mint mark 'M' is positioned to the left of the denomination. The curved legend 'BARCELONA '92' arcs along the upper right periphery, commemorating the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. The scalloped Spanish-flower coin shape frames the entire composition.

Additional information

The 1992 Spanish coinage program was organized around the Barcelona Olympics and the quincentenary of Columbus's first transatlantic voyage — two events the government leveraged hard for international visibility. The Sagrada Família issue fit that promotional logic: Gaudí's still-unfinished basilica had become Spain's most internationally recognized architectural symbol, a useful piece of soft power for a country newly embedded in the European Community.

Construction on the basilica began in 1882 and remains incomplete to this day.
