Additional information

Equatorial Guinea gained independence from Spain in October 1968, and within two years the new government was issuing collector-oriented silver pieces clearly aimed at foreign numismatic markets rather than domestic circulation. This coin is one of several 1970 issues that lifted imagery from European fine art — a pattern common among newly independent African states seeking hard currency through coin programs designed with Western buyers in mind.

Albrecht Dürer's drawing dates to around 1508, a preparatory study for the Heller Altarpiece commissioned by Frankfurt merchant Jakob Heller. The altarpiece itself was destroyed by fire in 1615.
