Equatorial Guinea's 1969 coinage was issued in the immediate aftermath of independence from Spain in October 1968 — the country had existed as a sovereign state for less than a year when these were struck. The peseta guineana was pegged to the Spanish peseta at par, a monetary arrangement that reflected the new nation's continued economic dependency on Madrid despite political separation.
Francisco Macías Nguema had just taken office as the country's first president. Within months he would begin dismantling democratic institutions; by 1972 he declared himself president for life. These coins predate that collapse by a narrow margin.
