Obverse description Black letterpress print on white paper, with the central field occupied by a finely engraved intaglio vignette of a front-facing portrait bust of the Spanish playwright and poet Pedro Calderón de la Barca, his name inscribed beneath. The full title of the issuing authority, the denomination in words — CINCUENTA PESETAS — and the place and date of issue, Madrid, 1 January 1878, are set in formal typography, with ruled spaces provided for the manuscript signatures of the Governor, Comptroller, and Cashier. A black serial number is printed to the field.

Reverse description Printed in greenish-yellow on white paper, the reverse is composed of two symmetrically placed circular vignettes, each enclosing an intaglio-style allegorical female portrait bust in left-facing profile against a white reserve. The surrounding field is filled with intricate guilloche lacework and a repetitive microtext border incorporating the denomination numeral, forming an elaborate geometric underprint framework across the entire surface.
